Truck crashes into Eid praying ground in Ijebu Igbo

Two Muslim worshipers have been killed in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, following the crash of a truck loaded with logs, into an Eid praying ground.

A policeman was also killed by a mob, who went on the rampage, after the ghastly crash.

Several other worshipers, were injured in the tragic Sallah accident, which occurred during praying session, at the praying ground located at four road, Oke Ife, in the town.

The tragic accident created tension in the town, as mob attempted to set the truck ablaze.

The mob resisted policemen deployed to restore normalcy.

Spokesman of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred when the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle.

Akinbiyi explained that the casualty would have been higher if the truck had not hit a Toyota Tundra vehicle, parked at the entrance to the praying ground.

Those injured in the accident, according to Akinbiyi, had been rushed to the General Hospital, Ijebu Igbo for treatment.

He said, “Our operatives said the truck ran over two children at the Etokori praying ground this morning, killing them instantly and injuring scores of others.

“An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps was among those who sustained injuries. A policeman also died while being rushed to the hospital.”

Ogun State Police Command confirmed the killing of one of its officers by a mob, after the crashing of a truck into a group of worshipers, at the Ijebu Igbo Eid praying ground.

The policeman, according to the command, was killed, while policemen deployed, were attempting to save the truck driver from being lynched by the mob.

Spokesman of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made this known to Rockcity FM, said the driver of the truck and two of the suspected members of the mob had been arrested.
