Troops have repelled fresh attempts by Boko Haram fighters to enter Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The vigilant troops sighted the insurgents who were in large number on the outskirt of the city, on Tuesday night.
The gun battle between troops and the insurgents, according to reports, continued till early Wednesday, hours to the inauguration of a new Governor for the State.
During the fighting there was panic in the city, amidst the sounds of explosions and gunshots throughout Tuesday night.
Troops later overpowered the terrorists, forcing them to retreat from the outskirt of the city.
Boko Haram in the past years had made several failed attempts to capture the city which is the base of ongoing anti-insurgency military operations in the North East region.
