Tomato Pest Spreads to Six States

A pest called tomato leaf miner blamed for the scarcity of tomato in the country has spread to farms in Lagos State.

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Chief Audu Ogbe, who announced this at a news conference in Abuja, listed other states where the pest had destroyed tomato farms as Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Plateau and Jigawa.

Already, Kaduna State Government had declared a state of emergency on the invasion of the state’s tomato farms by the pest, while Dangote Industries had shut down its tomato processing plant following acute shortage of tomato.

The minister said the Presidency is consulting widely on how to tackle the pest, and would deploy experts to the affected states.
