The Nigerian Supreme Court has declared Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) as the authentic faction of the party.
The apex court sacked Senator Ali Modu Sheriff which had hitherto been recognized by the Appeal Court as the authentic Chairman of the party.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday morning by a five member panel headed by Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour who read the lead judgement adopted by the panel, said the disputed PDP National Convention held in Port Harcourt on May 21, 2016 is valid and approves the Makarfi caretaker committee set up by the convention.
Top PDP leaders who witnessed the judgement included Governors Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike, as well as, Chief Bode George, Chief Olisa Metuh, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, Professor Tunde Adeniran and Former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau.
