*Police IG dismisses killing of 808 people in the area
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, has expressed sadness over the ongoing killing of people and destruction of property in Southern Kaduna.
The Sultan who is the president of Nigeria Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) called for the stoppage of the killing.
The monarch in a statement by the council’s Director of Administration, Ustaz Christian Okonkwo, said that at the last count, over 800 persons had been killed, while 57 others are suffering life threatening injuries.
He asks the Presidency and the Kaduna state government to urgently end the killing, to objectively investigate the incident, and prosecute whoever is found guilty.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has disputed the number of people claimed to have been killed in the ongoing conflicts in Southern Kaduna.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan had claimed that 808 were killed in 35 villages in the area.
The police chief speaking at the New Year dinner organised by the police in Abuja, said the number is exaggerated.
Religious, political and community leaders, according to him, need to be patriotic in their comments on the conflicts to avoid creating unnecessary tension in the area.
