Sultan blames insecurity in the north on unpunished impunity

The Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar

Northern Traditional Council has called for a stop to the preaching of hatred and violence from religious worship centres, as part of urgent moves needed to stop the mass killings in the north

The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Council, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who made the call at a joint meeting of the northern state governors and the traditional council in Kaduna, accused religious worship centres in the region of preaching what divides the north, instead of what unites it.

The Sultan also blamed the endless violence in the north on the failure of government to punish inpunity and criminal acts in the region.

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Borno state, Kashim Shetimma, addressing the opening session of the meeting notes that the north is blighted by insurgency, rural armed banditry, cattle rustling, ethnic and religious conflicts.

“We, the 19 governors of Northern states, believe that a gathering of some of the key leaders of the North is more than able to provide solutions to our problems. As governors, we are more determined than ever to sincerely walk the talks generated from this important meeting.

“There is no gainsaying the North is a poor, pathetic shadow of its former self. A well-endowed, promising geographic space which accounts for 70% of Nigeria’s land mass, up to at least 60% of its population, with huge solid minerals resources, with potentials for hydrocarbon resources, a growing mining industry, rich arable lands, a blossoming agro-industrial economy, Nigeria’s wealthiest region by GDP and the region with the brightest prospects for accelerated economic growth.”

Shettima said the North, which was a thriving region, had literally conspired against itself to be reduced to the laughing stock of the world.
