The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, has asked the Senate to drop a bill seeking the equality of male and female in sharing inheritance or family property.
The Sultan, who is the President of the Nigeria Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs, said the debate by Senators on the bill should stop, because the provisions of the bill have religious implications.
Speaking on the issue in Gusau at the closing ceremony of the Zamfara state annual Quranic recitation competition, the Sultan regards the bill as anti-Islamic religion , and therefore unacceptable to Muslims.
Islam, according to the Sultan, is a total way of life, and will oppose any move to change what Allah permitted Muslims to do.
The bill provides that a widow is entitled to her children custody, rights to remarry a man of her choice, rights to a fair share of her late husband property and live in her matrimonial home.
