Shoprite gets deadline to withdraw GMO products from shelves

Supermarket giants, Shoprite and next cash-an-carry have been given a seven day deadline to withdraw all genetically modified organism products (GMO) from their shelf.

Director General of the national bio-safety management agency, Doctor Rufus Ebegba, who issued the deadline, said the two supermarkets would be shut down if the GMO products are not withdrawn from their shelf.

Ebegba who issued the deadline at a briefing with representatives of the stores in attendance, said the agency had been receiving complain on the sale of GMO products in the supermarkets.

He said No GMO food would be allowed for sale, whether labelled or not.
