Senate To Raise Fine On Illegal Arms

The Senate has increased fine payable for the illegal importation of arms and ammunition into Nigeria.

The proposed fine is N1 million, instead of N1,000 in the existing Firearms Act 2004.

The proposed fine is contained in the Firearms Act 2004 (Amendment)  bill, passed during the Wednesday plenary of the Senate.

The bill also amended a clause in the 2004 Act to allow firearms not of military serviceable grade for use by Personnel of Civilian Joint Task Force and registered vigilante approved by the office of the National Security Adviser.

The amended bill was passed after the reports of the Senate Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Committee submitted by its chairman.

The committee chairman says the existing fine is inadequate to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition in the country.
