Senate Okays June 12 As Nigeria’s New Democracy Day

The Senate has passed a Bill seeking to recognize June 12 of every year as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The Bill amends the clause which provides for May 29 as the Democracy Day.

The Senators passed the Bill, following the presentation of a report on the Bill by the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan.

Earlier, the House of Representatives had passed the Bill in December 2018.

President Muhammadu Buhari in June 2018 declared June 12 to replace May 29 to honour late Bashorun Moshood Abiola, the winner of the Annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential Poll.

Already, Buhari has moved the major events of his inauguration for a second term in office to June 12.
