Senate gives INEC deadline to conduct inconclusive rivers polls

Senate floor

The senate has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) up till December 10, to conduct the pending poll into the National Assembly in Rivers State.

It warns that the senate would suspend plenary at the expiration of the deadline if the electoral agency fails to conduct the poll.

The senate took the decision following a motion moved by the senate deputy President, Ike Ekweremadu, who said the delay in conducting the poll has left rivers state without representation in the senate and House of Representatives.

Describing the development as unconstitutional, the senate deputy president said there was no excuse for INEC which conducted polls in the Sambisa forest during the 2015 polls and in Bayelsa state despite the militants attack to continue delaying the poll.
