Security forces repel Boko Haram attack on Maiduguri

Troops have successfully repelled attack by Boko Haram fighters to enter Maiduguri, ending panic that gripped residents in the city on Thursday night.

General Officer Commanding Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Nicholas Rogers, announcing the cheering news, said the heavily armed insurgents were routed at Jiddari Polo axis on the outskirt of the city.

The army commander said troops are in hot pursuits of the insurgents, after effectively taking control of general area of Jiddari.

While the battle lasted on Thursday evening, heavy gunshots were heard in Asabe, Jiddari Polo and Manza, compelling residents to flee their homes into the city.

The insurgents armed with artillery gun and rocket propelled grenades were said to have attempted to infiltrate the city from Jiddari Polo area.
