Armed robbers who specialized in snatching of motorcycle are now operating in Abeokuta and its environs.
Within the past one week, three of them were arrested by Ogun State Police Command, near the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), and Abule Ijaiye, near Lafenwa.
One of the suspects died while being chased after snatching a motorcycle at gunpoint from its owner.
Two of the suspects, Evans Ajaho and Isiah Aigba, were arrested after snatching a Bajaj motorcycle last Wednesday at Baagbon Village, near Alabata.
The suspects, according to the spokesman of the State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, always took the snatched motorcycle across the border into the Benin Republic for sale.
Also, another suspect seized a commercial motorcycle last Saturday, from its owner at Abule Ijaye, near Lafenwa.
Oyeyemi said the suspect posed as a passenger to ride a motorcycle, only for him to bring out a double barrel pistol, and snatched the motorcycle.
People in the area chased the suspect who fell into a ditch, hits his head on a concrete and died on the spot.
According to the PPRO, “The armed robber, who pretended to be a passenger, boarded the motorcycle, but suddenly brought out a locally-made double-barreled pistol and asked the rider, Toyin Ayoade, to surrender his bike.
“While the rider was struggling with him, he shot him on the hand and took possession of the motorcycle.
“A distress call was made, which the people of the community to give the suspect hot chase. But as he was running away with the bike, he fell into a ditch and hit his head on a concrete culvert. He died on the spot.”
