RIO OLYMPICS: Nigeria shocks Japan in opening match

Late comers Nigeria have edged past Japan 5-4 in a Rio Olympics Group B match in Manaus Friday morning.

The opening match of this group had finished in a 2-2 draw between Sweden and Colombia.

In the seventh minute, surprise starter Sadiq Umar gave Nigeria a great start, especially after the hassles they encountered getting to Brazil from their training base in Atlanta, USA.

However, a minute later, Japan drew level when they scored from the penalty spot after Stanley Amuzie fouled inside his box.

Oghenekaro Etebo regained the lead for Nigeria but Japan made it 2-2 almost immediately when they caught the Nigeria defence napping.

Etebo scored Nigeria’s third goal, and fourth goal when he fired home from outside the box after the Japan goalkeeper’s poor clearance from a dangerous Mikel ball into the box.

However, Japan pulled a goal back on 70 minutes and another goal in stoppage time.
