*Rice Processors Want Sale Of Imported Rice Criminalized

Rice processors in the country have canvassed for the criminalizing of the sale of imported rice as the smuggling of the community into Nigeria continued, despite the ban on its importation across the land borders

They warn that rice mills operating in Nigeria may fold up if federal government fails to stop the spate of rice been smuggled into the country

Director General of Rice Processors Association of Nigeria, Andy Ekwelem, addressing a news conference says the continued smuggling and sale of foreign rice, is threatening the N3.4 Trillion investment in local rice value chain sector

He calls for a new law that will empower law enforcement agencies to visit markets and shops to arrest anyone found with imported rice According to him, 13 million Nigerians with direct jobs in the rice value chain sector will lose their jobs if the rice mills fold up
