Reps Considers Bill Scrapping LG Caretaker Committees

House of Reps is considering a bill seeking to reduce the control of state governors on the Local Government System.

The bill aiming at granting full autonomy among other provisions wants the scrapping of the caretaker committees set up by several governors to run the Local Governments in their respective states.

The bill which passed a second reading in the house is sponsored by a member of the house, Dachung Bagos, who says that the provisions in the 1999 constitution for running of councils is subject to abuse because it lacks guidelines on how to run the councils.

The Lawmaker says it is undemocratic for governors to appoint Local Government Chairmen and Councillors in the guise of caretaker committees for the councils.

He explains that the bill among others provides for the posts of chairman, vice chairman and other guidelines on how to operate a democratically elected local government.
