Presidential Adviser Warns On Nigeria’s Land Border Closure

Nigeria’s Land Border Closure

Chairman of the presidential economy advisory committee, Doctor Doyin Salami, has asked the federal government to reopen Nigeria’s land borders shut down over a year ago

Salami warns that the continued closure of the land borders is no longer sustainable

The economist speaking in Abuja at a meeting of the secured agricultural commodities transportation and storage, says the continued border closure will backfire for Nigeria

Instead of continued border closure, salami advises federal government to adopt policies to reduce the high cost of production, to enable Nigeria’s manufactured products be competitive in the global market

He warns that Nigeria will lose out in the African continental free trade agreement, if its products could not compete against products from other African Nations

According to him, Nigeria will then become a dumping ground for products from other African countries

Finance minister, Zainab Ahmed, recently said that a presidential committee set up to study the more than one-year border closure, and had recommended that they should be re-open But days later, Agriculture Minister, Mohammed Nanono, said that the closure of the land borders will remain indefinitely
