Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, says the police force requires more 116,510 policemen.
He explains that the present police strength of 338,490 personnel translate to one police officer to every 537 Nigerian.
Idris speaking at a dinner by the alumni association of the National Policy for Strategic Studies puts the United Nations recommended ratio at one police officer to 40 persons.
The under-strength of the force, according to him is caused by the stoppage of the file-and-rank recruitment since the year 2010.
The police chief notes that the 10,000 more hands being recruited is the first since 2010.
