The inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, has directed Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squads (FSARS) and other police special tactical units, to immediately stop routine patrols on roads nationwide
The other tactical units, are intelligence response team and anti-cultism squad
Adamu in a statement by force spokesman, Frank Mba, directs them to keep off low risk duties, such as stop-and-search, mounting of checkpoints and road blocks and traffic checks with immediate effect
The police chief directs them to focus mainly on armed robberies, kidnapping and other violent crimes, adding that they must not invade the privacy of people, such as unauthorized search of their phones, laptops and other smart devices
While on tactical assignments, Adamu says they must not wear mufti, but be in uniform or approved tactical gears The police inspector general says the directive followed findings by force headquarters that a few tactical squad’s operatives are into all forms of illegalities
