Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the deployment of police special tactical force to Benue state, following last Monday’s attack by gunmen on a major market in Zaki Biam.
Several people were killed and injured in the attack by the gunmen, who also set houses on fire in the town.
Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, explained that the tactical force include police mobile force (PMF), counter-terrorism unit, conventional policemen, and special anti-robbery squad.
He said that the force would have its headquarter in Zaki Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of the State.
“The Police Special Tactical Force is led by the Commissioner of Police in charge of PMF, Force Headquarters, Abuja under the supervision of Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Department of Operations.
“To achieve success in these operations, the Police Special Tactical Force will be proactive, work on actionable intelligence already at the disposal of the Nigeria Police Force, and carry out 24 hours surveillance and patrol,” Moshood said.
Also in the tactical force are the anti-explosive unit, police sniffer dog unit, and police air wing.
President Muhammadu Buhari last Tuesday had directed security agencies to intervene in Benue state and other parts of the country to end killings.
