Fresh controversy has emerged on the existence of plastic rice in the Nigerian market.
Nigeria Customs Service was the first to raise the controversy when it claimed to have seized a consignment of plastic rice with brand name of ‘Best Tomato Rice’ at a warehouse in Lagos, ahead of the Yuletide season.
National Drug, Food Administration Control (NAFDAC) and the Health Minister later faulted the claim after testing the seized rice in laboratories, and concluded that there is no plastic rice in Nigeria.
But the Polymer Institute of Nigeria over the weekend insists that exported plastic rice from China has found its way into the Nigerian market.
The institute president, Professor Paul Mamza, asks the Presidency to halt the importation of the rice.
Professor Mamza said the same rice is the same type seized by the Customs which has no NAFDAC registration number and expiry date.
