Worried by the rising agitation by public sector workers over unpaid salaries, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the state governors to pay the outstanding salaries with fund released to them from the excess deduction from the servicing of the Paris and London clubs loans.
Buhari in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Shehu Garba, said the issue of workers benefits, particularly salaries and pensions, must not be allowed to continue, and should be handled urgently to save their families from distress.
For instance, the president stated that the N55.2billion he approved for the payment of the excess refund in batches to all the 33 states entitled to it.
Buhari also recalled several bail-out packages the Presidency had given to the states.
BudgIT in its recent reports had named Lagos, Rivers and Enugu states as the states capable of meeting the obligation to their workers.
