Smugglers on Tuesday went on rampage in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, in protest against the killing of one of them by a patrol of Nigeria customs service
Four others were injured in a shootout between the customs patrol and smugglers at Ita Osu near Kobape
Also injured in the shootout are three customs officer and a soldier
The smugglers later brought the corpse of their dead colleague to the governor’s office, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, causing traffic gridlock in the area
Secretary to the state government, Tokunbo Talabi, who received the protesting smugglers, promised that the matter will be taken up by the state government, to ensure that customs officers who fired the shots were brought to book
Meanwhile, the Zone ‘A’ of federal operating unit of customs has said that its operatives were attacked by armed men while intercepting six vehicles loaded with smuggled rice on Tuesday morning near Abeokuta
Spokesman of the Zonal Customs Command, Theophilus Duniya in a statement says the armed men escorting the smugglers’ vehicles opened gunfire on the customs patrol to prevent the seizure of the smuggled rice
He, however, says that the customs patrol with superior firepower were able to evacuate three of the smuggled rice to the customs warehouse In the process, he says that three customs officers and a soldier in the patrol were injured
