Ogun replaces Itiola as MAPOLY rector

NUC approves upgrading of MAPOLY to University of Technology

Ogun State government has relieved the rector of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Professor Bamidele Itiola, of his appointment, with immediate effect.

Secretary to the state government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, in a release, announces the appointment of Ayodeji Salmon Tella, as the acting rector for the polytechnic.

The state government orders Itiola to immediately proceed on his terminal leave, adding that it is part of the transition programme, involving Mapoly and the new Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, Abeokuta.

The new appointment was announced few hours after hundreds of Mapoly students staged a protest march from their Ojere campus, to the Governor’s Office at Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, over the status of their institution.

The students who were later addressed by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, also protested the delay in the conduct of their semester examination, following the strike embarked upon by their lecturers since September 18.

The students also sought clarification from the governor, whether they will be allowed to remain at the MAPOLY campus, to complete their programme, or be moved to the new polytechnic at Ipokia.

Governor Amosun also asked staff of MAPOLY, who are not willing to perform their duty, over the establishment of the new Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, to be ready to resign their appointments.

The governor accused the lecturers of holding both his administration and students to ransom, for not conducting the semester examination.

The governor also explained that the state government did not order the sale of any form to students, because new students will not be admitted into the Higher National Diploma classes of MAPOLY.

He said, “Creating Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology will not affect you, we have said that nobody in that school is not going to Ipokia, it will take four years before MAPOLY goes into extinction.

“The reason is this, those in HND ll now, you will leave, those in HND l, you will be in this Abeokuta. All of you in Abeokuta here, you will go through your normal course, and that is why I said some people that have been given the assignment, they are trying to be mischievous.

“We’ve told them, those who are in the polytechnic now, they will finish their courses; we are going go employ new ones for Ogun State polytechnic and anyone that is qualified among them, they are qualified to apply, we are not taking all your lecturers now because they are here.

“If they believe, they are only trying to blackmail us and we will sort it out. They have met me and I explained to them, what they are thinking is that all of them would have to go to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology; it is not going to happen.

“But your lecturers are not comfortable with this, they believe all of them would be in Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology automatically, but we said no.

“The only reason why they are not holding your exams is to think they can blackmail or hoodwink us, but we will not, your exams will be done.”
