Ogun state government is to send a bill seeking the quick dispensation of criminal cases in courts, to the state House of Assembly.
Justice commissioner, Dr. Olumide Ayeni who made this known in Abeokuta, while defending his ministry’s N870 million expenditure in the state’s 2017 budget proposal at the state House of Assembly, said the bill seeks to include new 550 sections in the administration of criminal justice system.
The commissioner explained that the proposed bill, is considering the introduction of community service, in place of jail terms on minor offences, while those convicted for major offences will have their assets forfeited.
The state House of Assembly’s Deputy Speaker, Kunle Oluomo asked the state government to make available to the assembly a prototype of building of the proposed Citizens’ Right Centres at the local government level, where people can get free legal services.
Oluomo said this will encourage wealthy individuals to assist the state government to provide structures for the proposed Citizens’ Right Centres that will enable people who cannot afford legal fees to have easy access to justice
