Police hunt for kidnapper of herdsmen in Abeokuta

Policemen have shot dead member of a robbery gang, who shot and injured a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), near Ogbere, in the Ijebu waterside axis of Ogun State.

The armed robber was the last member of the robbery gang who ambushed a police team, responding to a distress call, last September, yet to be arrested.

The DPO of Ogbere Divisional Police Headquarters, Adeyinka Akingbade, who led the police team was shot and injured in the ambush by the bandits.

Spokesman of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said that a police team who had been tracking the fleeing suspect, following intelligence that he sneaked into Ijebu Ife on Christmas day.

The suspect, according to him, was later traced to his in-law house in the town, where he exchanged gunfire with the police team who shot him dead during the incident.

He listed items seized from the suspect as a locally made pistol, assorted charms, a matchet and a jeep which has two different number plates.

Oyeyemi said, “Upon the information, the policemen swiftly moved to the place, but before getting there, he had left the place. He was, however traced to his in-law’s house where the police operatives caught up with him.

“Having realised that the game was up, he brought out a pistol and started firing at the policemen. The operatives were left with no other alternative than to fire back, consequence upon which he was shot dead”.

The state police commissioner, Ahmed Ilyasu, commended the police team for bringing down the last member of the robbery gang who shot and injured the DPO
