The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) have set up an enforcement team, to rid Ogun State of all illegal and prohibited firearms and ammunition in circulation, in the state.

To this end, Ogun State Police Command has issued a 21-day deadline to all those with such weapons, to surrender them to the state criminal investigations and intelligence department, or the nearest police station.

Those affected include hunters, vigilante outfits, night watch guards and associations in possession of such arms.

The command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, also asked those already issued with firearms licence, to possess arms and ammunition, to submit them to the police for verification and re-validation within the 21-day period.

At the expiration of the 21-day deadline, Oyeyemi said all those who failed to do so will be arrested and prosecuted by the enforcement team set up by the state police commissioner to recover illegal and prohibited arms and ammunition, as well as those with unverified licences.

The enforcement team, according to him, will conduct cordon, search and raid of any premises, locations or sites where such weapons are being kept, suspected to be kept, or put to use.
