*Ogun Nut, ASUSS Disagree On Retirement Age For Teachers

Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ogun State has faulted those opposing the new retirement age and service years for teachers

The NUT says it is in the best interests of teachers and the teaching profession

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in Ogun State in an earlier interview with Rockcityfm, had argued that the new retirement age will be counterproductive, as the elongation of tenure by five years will affect young and jobless graduates, seeking to enter the teaching profession

The ASUS chairman, Akeem Lasisi explains that the policy if implemented, will results in the tenure of teachers in management cadre, blocking most of the junior teachers in the classrooms from reaching the peak of their teaching career

But the state NUT chairman, Samson Oyelere, in an interview with Busola Adegbite, welcomes the new retirement age, saying it is a product of ten years struggles by the union which canvassed for it

He says there is nothing wrong in the policy since judges and university professors are now retiring at the age of seventy

According to him, besides the elongating the retirement age and service years, the new package contains several benefits for teachers, including the new teacher salary structure, several allowances as well as job prospects for graduates in education

He says the new policy will also reduce the number of teachers retiring, thereby addressing the acute shortage of teachers

Oyelere also argues that the new retirement age and service years will not affect the upward movement of teachers in classrooms and that the existing vacancies in public schools could be filled by fresh graduate teachers

Besides, the NUT chairman says that some teachers who joined teaching profession at the age of 40 to 45 years, instead of serving for only 15 years under the present arrangement, will have more years to serve, He explains that elongating service years by five more years will discourage collection of pensions by teachers retiring at the age of sixty without been in classrooms.
