Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of lists of candidates by political parties, expected to end today till July 27, to give them more time to conduct their primaries ahead of October 8 council poll.
A Commissioner at the agency, Mutiu Agboke who made this known to Rockcity FM in Abeokuta said the deadline was extended, after the consideration several petitions received from political parties.
Agboke said other dates in the election time-table had been changed with the new amendment, asking political parties to visit office of OGSIEC office in Abeokuta for detailed information on the changes.
All political parties are expected to end their campaign activities by 12 mid-night of Thursday, October 6
Before the extension by OGSIEC, political parties had been battling with the screening of their aspirants for the chairmanship and councillorship seats in the state 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAS).
The aspirants had besieged the Abeokuta state secretariats of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC), Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and Unity Party of Nigeria(UPN) on Thursday in a last minute rush to meet the earlier deadline.
Speaking on the situation, the state chairman of UPN, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Oginni said her party which started its screening of aspirants since Monday for councillorship and chairmanship last Wednesday for the chairmanship seats, would have submitted a list of elected candidates on Friday.
Also the state secretary of PDP, Alhaji Semiu Sodipo said the party would conclude screening on Friday and conduct primary to elect candidates for the poll, adding that a letter has been written to OGSIEC to observe the process.
The State Chairman of APC, Alhaji Roqueeb Adeniji whose party has the largest number of aspirants, said the party was working very hard to complete the screening exercise and elect its candidate by Friday.
