Crisis is imminent in Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC), as the Ogun East caucus of the party, picked a candidate from the Ijebu/Remo axis, to contest for the APC ticket for the 2019 governorship poll.
The candidate, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, a commissioner in Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s cabinet, was picked by the Ijebu/Remo Governorship Agenda Elders Forum at a mini-primaries on Wednesday in Ijebu Ode.
Ashiru clinched the Ijebu/Remo APC axis ticket by defeating several other aspirants from the zone, including Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, former Governor Adegbenga Kaka, Prince Segun Adesegun, Chief Muyiwa Oladipo, and Jimi Lawal.
Announcing the result of the mini-primary, the forum chairman, Doctor Gbolabo Osinowo, said that Ashiru scored 89 votes to defeat his closest rivals, including Mamora who received 88.25 votes, and kaka (80.5).
The election is expected to put the Ogun East APC at loggerhead with the governor, who has repeatedly said that the APC governorship ticket will go to a candidate from Yewa axis of the state.
The position of Amosun had been opposed by a national leader of APC, Aremo Olusegun Osoba who said the party’s governorship ticket should be thrown open to aspirants from Ogun East and West zone.
