Ogun Customs intercepts truck loaded with N42m worth of smuggled turkey

Operatives of Nigeria Customs Service have intercepted a truck load of smuggled frozen turkey along the Abeokuta-Sagamu interchange expressway in Ogun State.

The truck, marked ICT-13E-O47, belonging to Dangote Cement Plant, Ibeshe, was loaded with 3,000 cartons of contraband frozen turkey, last Saturday at 3.45 am.

Ogun State comptroller, Sani Magudu, who made this known at a news conference in Abeokuta, estimated the value of the impounded turkey at N47.2 million, with a duty value of N20.2 million.

The comptroller said the truck driver who escaped after the interception, is being tracked.

Magudu explained that the truck had been placed under surveillance from its loading point in Benin Republic by Customs operatives who decided to intercept it near the Sagamu interchange.

He said, “Nigeria Customs Service, with the way we do our things, we are one step ahead of them and they have decided to connive with Dangote truck drivers. They started loading around 9pm till 3am the next day. They used the water creek and imported it from Cotonou into Nigeria. We monitored them and followed them and while they were on their way to their destination along the Lagos Ibadan expressway, we intercepted them along the Sagamu interchange and arrested them.

“When they saw us coming, they jumped out and we were able to intercept the truck and have a suspect in our custody. After our investigations, he would be taken to Court. They would continue to device new means in smuggling frozen poultry products, but the Nigeria Custom Service, Ogun State in particular would not relent in getting them.

“It is estimated to be 3000 cartoons according to the suspect. It is a prohibited item. Government has their reasons for prohibiting it and our work as Custom Service is to implement it. The suspect would be charged to court. The driver is on the run but the second person is in our custody. We are making contacts with them to come down to this place and when they come we would investigate them.

“We have intercepted two tokunbo vehicles, which was as a result of our anti-smuggling activities and also intercepted India hemp which is a product we intercepted’’.
