Ogun State government said it will today begin part payment of the arrears of co-operative societies deductions from the salaries of workers on its payroll.
Also to benefit from the payment are workers on the payroll of the state’s local governments.
Finance commissioner, Adewale Osinowo, who made this known in a statement, said the state government workers will be paid four months of the deduction arrears.
For the local governments workers, the commissioner, said they will get two months as part of the Ibikunle Amosun administration’s monthly supports to the councils.
Osinowo assured that the state government will clear the balance of the deduction arrears when its finance improves.
Reacting to the planned payment, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria said that its members are being owed 16 months deduction from their salaries which were not remitted to co-operative societies.
The state’s secretary, Olusegun Adebiyi, told Rockcity FM in Abeokuta, that senior civil servants will still be owed 12 months of deduction arrears if the four month payment is actualized.
The state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Olatunji Ayuba, who also spoke with Rockcity FM in Abeokuta, said councils workers are being owed between three to nine months co-operative societies deduction from their salaries.
The scope of the arrears, according to him, varies from one local government to the other, because they are not centralized like the state government.
