Ogoniland clean up to last 20 years – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the clean-up of the Ogoniland in Rivers state will last up to 20 years.

Buhari made this known at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while inaugurating the Governing Council and the Board of Trustees of the trust fund for the hydrocarbon pollution remediation project for the implementation of the report of the United Nations environment programme.

He said the first five years of the clean-up project would address the emergency response measures and remediation, while the subsequent years would be used to restore the ecosystem of the polluted areas in the community.

The President said the project would serve as the gold standard for the clean-up of similar pollution in other parts of the Niger Delta region.
