Obasanjo worried over Governors encroachment on Councils

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over the encroachment of the State Governors into the affairs of the Local Government system.

Obasanjo, who spoke while receiving a delegation of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) at his hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, accused the governors of bastardizing the councils and making them impotent.

The former president recalled that when the Local Governments were introduced in 1976, while he was a military ruler, Local Governments were given functions and responsibilities, to perform as a tier of government.

Obasanjo who said he does not have the executive powers to address the plight of the councils, urged councils workers and Nigerians, to continue pressurizing the legislature to make the Local Government system truly democratic, as envisaged by its founding fathers.
