Obasanjo, Gumi Call For Special Court For Bandits, Kidnappers

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo and a Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Gumi have canvassed for the establishment of special courts to fast-track handling cases of armed banditry

The proposed special courts will also handle cases of kidnapping, ransom taking and illegal possession of arms

Both of them, made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of their closed meeting, held behind the close door at the pent house of the former president in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Complex, Abeokuta

According to them, well meaning Nigerians must be involved in seeking solution to the issue of armed banditry and insecurity, by stopping the blame game, as well as ethnicising, religiounizing and regionaling of crimes

They also ask federal government to be proactive, secure updated intelligence in fighting organized crimes

Obasanjo and Gumi suggest that bandits in the forests willing to come out, should be considered for rehabilitation, equipped with skills, empowered and jobs created for them

Gumi was accompanied on the visit by some religious leaders, including Usman Yusuf, Tukur Mamu, Umar Ardo, Ibrahim Abdulahi, Suleiman Gumi, Suleiman Yakubu and Buba Mohammed Obasanjo was invited to visit Kaduna for further discussion on the initiative
