Ugandan authorities say at least nine people have drowned after a boat capsized on Lake Albert on Christmas day.
District Police Commander John Rutangira said 45 football fans had crowded into the fishing boat. He further stated that most of the passengers that boarded the sunk boat were drunk at the time of the accident.
The team which is said to be from Buliisa District, was on its way to a Christmas day football match in Hoima District, singing songs and blowing trumpets and whistles.
Fishermen have assisted authorities on the rescue operation.
Police say the others survived, including 21 who at first were described as missing.
The accident was the second major disaster on Uganda’s lakes in three days. On Friday, about 20 people perished in similar circumstances on Lake Victoria.
