NIMET SENSITIZES FARMERS ON THE NEED FOR WEATHER PREDICTION

Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) said farming activities have been affected in Nigeria negatively due to lack of information concerning weather predictions before planting.

The agency says stakeholders in the agricultural value chain needs to be educated on how best to respect and follow seasonal climate prediction before planting.

The advice was rendered by a Numerical Weather Prediction Expert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMet), Mr Charles Olubiyi, at a one-day Agriculture stakeholder’s workshop organized on improving the provision of climate information services to farmers last Friday.

According to him, the sensitization which was organized by a Non Governmental Organisation, Human Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) in collaboration with NIMET and Power of Voices Partnership-African Activists for Climate justice, was to educate stakeholders in the agricultural value chain on how best to respect and follow seasonal climate prediction.

Olubiyi in his statement noted that farmers had been able to build calendar in planning for the yearly farming activities as well as avoid flooding before it occurs through NIMET weather prediction.

The expert also said that NIMET stands to play a role in ensuring that Nigeria becomes very robust when it comes to food security in the country.

Also in the seminal, the executive secretary of HEDA Resource Center, Mr Sulaiman Arigbagbu says that Nigeria do not have access to enough information to climate services which is a problem not only to the farmers but the society.

The HEDA executive secretary explains that one of the best ways to bring resilience into agriculture is for farmers to have access to appropriate, timely and accurate climate information.

He urges the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Federal Ministry of Environment and states Ministry’s of Agriculture to also join in shearing the information deck in order to take action against food insecurity in the country.
