The website of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has crashed, following massive applications by telecommunications subscribers, applying for the National Indentity Number (NIN)
The website collapsed on Monday, after applicants seeking to register for the NIN besieged their offices nationwide, to avoid their telephone lines being disconnected from the network
Since the website collapsed on Monday, it has not been restored
Director general of the agency, Aliyu Aziz, addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, says they were not prepare for such a massive increase in the number of applicants
The agency, according to him, lacks the capacity to cope with the huge applicants
He explains that the agency requires 4,000 registration centres to enrol the 200 million Nigerians The director general says the commission had been able to registered about one million new applicants within the past one week, raising the number of Nigerians issued with the national identity number to 43 million and 901 thousand
