Local production of rice in Nigeria has hit 15 million metric tonnes yearly.
A Director in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohammed Adamu, who made this known while inaugurating the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN) in Kano, said 34 states are now producing rice.
He added that many of the states are now producing three times in a year.
The production figure, according to Adamu, has far outstripped 1.2 million metric tonnes last year.
He said that the massive production will save Nigeria about N300 billion being spent yearly on rice import.
Adamu further disclosed that investigations by the Federal Government revealed that rice imported to Nigeria are 10-15 years old and are preserved with chemicals which can cause cancer to consumers.
