Nigeria Imports More Than 90 Per Cent Of Wheat Requirement

Nigeria is producing less than one per cent of 4,900 metric tonnes of wheat that it is consuming yearly

A data from the United States Department of Agriculture puts local production of wheat in Nigeria at 60 metric tonnes yearly each in 2018, 2019 and 2020

In contrast, Nigeria’s local consumption of the item was 4,760 in 2018, 4,900 in 2019 and 4,319 in 2020

The demand for wheat, according to the data increased from 3,582 metric tonnes in 2010 to 4,900 metric tonnes in 2019 Central Bank of Nigeria had alerted of its plan to place Sugar and Wheat on the list of items whose importers will not benefit from foreign exchange
