Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says Nigeria has emerged as the world’s largest importer of petrol.
Also, Nigeria is the only member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) importing refined petroleum products.
NNPC Group Managing Director, Doctor Maikanti Baru, made this known at the 2018 Oloibiri Lecture Series in Abuja.
“As we speak today, Nigeria is the only OPEC country that imports petrol and we are the largest importer of PMS in the world,” Baru said.
As at now, Baru said that Nigeria is importing one million metric tonnes of petrol every month.
“We actually import one million tonnes of PMS every month into a country that produces oil and gas and has refinery. It is a shameful thing, it doesn’t make sense and that is what we are trying to address,” he said.
He regarded the development which he blames on the bad shape of local refineries as shameful for a country that produces crude oil.
