The Senate says it is working on the new Electoral Act, hoping President Muhammadu Buhari will assent to it, latest by end of January, next year, to reposition the electoral system for the 2019 polls.
Senate INEC Committee Chairman, Habu Kyari, who made this known in an interview with newsmen in Maiduguri, said the committee will ensure that all the amendments to the act were completed and passed into law by the national assembly before end of the year.
Kyari said consultations are ongoing by the committee on the various proposals for consideration in amending the act.
He listed the proposal as including electronic voting, card reader machine, diaspora voting, and the independent candidature.
Last year, 20 clauses were amended in the Electoral Act by the National Assembly and assented to by former President Goodluck Jonathan on the eve of the 2015 polls.
