NEMA issues flood alert as Niger Republic releases water from dam

11 people killed, others injured in massive flooding in Niger State

Several states in the country are to experience more flooding as government of Niger Republic is set to release water from its dam, now at orange level.

Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Maihaja, raised the alert at a flood coordination meeting in Abuja.

The expected release of water from the dam in Niger Republic, according to him, is worrisome as water in the Shiroro, Kainji, and Jebba dams are already spilling.

“This [release of water from Niger Republic dam] is very alarming and something we should be concerned about. We must assess the preparedness of all stakeholders in response to the flood disaster,” he said.

The NEMA Director General also said that rivers in Kogi, Kebbi and Benue states are overflown.

“That gives us another concern as Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba dams are already spilling water.” he said. “The rivers in Kogi and Kebbi states are also already overflowing.”

At present, Maihaja explained that 27 states are battling with flood, ten others with rainstorm and windstorm, while 40,161 people are affected by flooding
