NDLEA arrests 71 suspects for drug possession in Ogun since January

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it seized 2,126.54 kilogrammes of indian hemp and 8.67 kilogrammes of psychotropic substances in Ogun State between January and this month.

The agency also arrested 71 suspects during the period, 18 of them convicted after prosecution, while 20 cases are at various stages of prosecution in court.

The state commander of NDLEA , Bala Fagge who gave an update of the drug seizure in Abeokuta, at a ceremony marking the 2017 United Nations  Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, pledged that the agency will continue to work closely with the Ogun State Drug Abuse Control Committee to sustain its sensitizing of the public on dangers of drug abuse.

Fagge enjoined parents to always listen to their children and youths whom he describes as the most vulnerable groups.

Health commissioner, Doctor Babatunde Ipaye represented by the permanent secretary Hospital Management Board, Doctor Ekundayo Ayinde asks the stakeholders, particularly the religious leaders to adopt preventive approach to reduce rate of drug abuse  in the society.

High point of the ceremony was the presentation of prizes and trophy to the winners of quiz competition organized for drug free clubs among secondary schools, with Saint Leo Secondary School, Abeokuta emerging as champions, the Sacred Heart College, Abeokuta coming second while Omolaja Sodipo Memorial Anglican School, also in Abeokuta, came third.
