NAFDAC recalls 2.4 million bottles of codeine cough syrup

Federal Health Ministry said 2.4 million bottles of codeine containing cough syrup, have been recalled from pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies nationwide.

The recall follows the audit tracking of the substance carried out by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)

Spokesman of the Ministry, Mrs Boade Akinola, who made this known, said that Health Minister, Professor Isaac Adewole, issues the directive for the recall, after receiving the final report of a 22 member stakeholders committee set up to investigate the abuse of the substance.

The presidency last May, have banned the importation and production of codeine as an active pharmaceutical ingredients for preparation of cough syrup.
