NAFDAC destroys N3.5bn Tramadol, other drugs, at Sagamu dump site

National Agency for Food, Drug, Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has destroyed a large consignment of seized drugs worth N3.5 billion, at its dump site in Sagamu, Ogun State.

The drugs include Tramadol, whose street value is put at n1.7 billion, as well as, codeine, diclofenac, unwholesome brazilian sugar, damaged and expired drugs handed over by companies and other fake drugs.

The destruction of the multi-billion drug was witnessed by the Agency’s Director General, Professor Moji Adeyeye, and the Ogun State First Lady, Mrs Olufunso Amosun.

Others were Ogun State Health Commissioner, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, Environment Commissioner, Bolaji Oyeleye and other stakeholders.

Adeyeye explained that, the tramadol was of 250 milligrams to 500 grammes, instead of the 50 milligrams and 100 millgrams approved for use in Nigeria.

Mrs Amosun asked NAFDAC to consider the adoption of global standard of destroying seized drugs, adding that, when they are buried in open space, like the Sagamu dump site, they emit dangerous chemicals into the air.
