Malta Prime Minister calls elections a year early amid family scandal

Malta Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat

Malta Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat has called for a snap general poll for June 3, a year before his term ends.

The opposition has been calling for his resignation over allegation that his wife owned an offshore company in Panama.

The Prime minister and his wife, Michelle, have denied the claim, and a magisterial inquiry is under way.

The Maltese leader said he wanted to protect the country from uncertainty.

The current scandal erupted earlier on Monday when the blogger, Daphine Galizia, made the claim basing the claim on documents from the so-called Panama Papers.
