Senate leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, has faulted claims that Nigerian Senators are earning jumbo salaries and allowances.
Lawan, who is a leading aspirant for Ninth National Assembly’s Senate Presidency, defended the n13.5 million monthly salaries and allowances of the senators.
The Senate leader, speaking to newsmen in Abuja, explained that the major components of the n13.5 million is for oversight assignments which may take a Senator outside Nigeria.
Lawan said the gross pay of a Senator every month is n1 million out of which he takes home n700,000 after deduction of taxes.
The APC Senator also explained that APC is still in control of the Senate despite losing all the three Senatorial Seats it won in Zamfara State to PDP, following the Supreme Court’s cancellation of the APC primaries in the State.
According to Lawan, APC still has 62 seats in the Senate, against 44 for PDP, despite the Court award of APC three Senatorial Seats in Zamfara State to PDP.
