A fresh outbreak of Lassa fever in Plateau state has claimed the life of a student, while two others have been hospitalized in an isolated centre.
The outbreak was recorded at the Federal Government Girls College, Langtang.
Plateau Health Commissioner Kuden Deyin, who confirmed the outbreak, said four students were rushed from the school clinic to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
Deyin said immediately the students began to show symptoms of Lassa fever, their blood samples were taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for a Laboratory test, where the results showed positive to the disease.
“One among those that tested positive is dead, while the other two are still on admission at JUTH,” he said.
The Commissioner said that the Plateau government and the Principal of the college had agreed to halt the resumption of other students from their mid-term break.
He advised families with children from the school to observe them and report any noticed symptom of the fever to JUTH, Plateau Specialist Hospital or the Bingham University Teaching Hospital.
The Commissioner also urged health workers to be on the alert and rush patients with symptoms of Lassa fever to tertiary health institutions.
