The death toll from meningitis epidemic has continued to rise, as Lagos state records two deaths from the initial three suspected cases.
The death toll, according to the National Centre for Disease Contro l(NCDC), rose to 438 last Wednesday, from 336 last Monday.
The centre in a statement explained that, the deaths were recorded in 109 local government areas, in 19 states.
It also says, the number of suspected cases had increased to 3,959, out of which 181 has been confirmed.
Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi and Sokoto states in the North-West zone, and Niger State in the North-Central zone account for about 95% of the cases reported.
The NCDC said the apparent increase in number of cases was as a result of intensified case-finding going on in the affected States.
The most common serotype is Neisseria meningitidis serotype C (Nm C). Meningitis EOC has deployed personnel to support response activities in the five most affected States.
